Monty Don has shared the heartbreaking reason why he could never part ways with his Herefordshire home. In a recent canine-themed interview, the BBC Gardeners’ World star shared insights into how he approaches keeping his dogs and maintaining a beautiful garden. It seems it’s all about “discipline”.

The green-fingered presenter, who currently owns two dogs, a golden retriever named Ned and a Yorkshire terrier named Patti, detailed how he believes in training dogs for obedience as it’s for their “safety and well-being”. Monty’s pet pooches can often be spotted accompanying him at his Longmeadow garden, which began life as a two-acre abandoned field, but is now a stunning horticultural haven. It’s also where his content is shot for the BBC gardening programme, so with such a prized possession in his backyard, it would be understandable if he were wary about allowing his dogs to enter, but this simply isn’t the case.

Monty told Saga Magazine: “The advice I give about dogs trashing gardens is don’t let them get away with it – discipline them. Dogs respond to firm but gentle discipline, which means saying no. I believe in training dogs for obedience, for their safety and well-being.”

It was also noted that a garden can serve as a permanent memorial to your beloved pets. Monty himself has laid all his late pets to rest in the verdant copse at his sprawling garden.

It’s reportedly one of the reasons why he could never sell his home. He added: “The garden is theirs as much as mine. It’s a good way of remembering them every day as we walk past – and they’re part of the garden.”

On his website, Monty explained that he’d lived with dogs all his life, so it was natural to him that he should be “accompanied by a dog or two” wherever he was in his garden.

He also detailed how “by and large”, they do zero damage to the garden and respect it “completely”, adding that they don’t often dig or “crash through the flower beds”.

Over the years, Monty has had many dogs, including Peggy, a pug and Chinese crested cross, who sadly passed away in February 2024 following a cancer diagnosis. Monty described her end as “peaceful and dignified”.

He also had a golden retriever named Nellie who tragically passed in 2023 from cancer. At the time, Monty took to social media to share the heartbreaking update with his followers.

Monty said: “We buried her in the garden next to Nigel wrapped in one of my jackets with flowers, balls and her favourite biscuits.

“Her end was peaceful and dignified and ended obvious suffering but it never gets any easier to bear. So life goes on, but for the moment we are very, very sad.”
