GB News halted their breakfast show for “breaking news” in another huge blow for Rachel Reeves. In an urgent announcement Stephen Dixon alongside fellow presenter Ellie Costello shared that the Office of National Statistics (ONS) latest report revealed government borrowing has increased significantly. Borrowing rose by more than expected in June to £20.7 billion. This comes as the chancellor prepares for the autumn budget where she may have to make tax rises, amid ongoing pressure for Reeves to repair the public finances. Ministers have warned of “financial consequences” after the backtracking on disability benefits and winter fuel payments for pensioners, which will cost more than £6bn.

“We’ve just got some breaking news coming in actually,” Stephen began. “The first one from the Office for National Statistics that revealed government borrowing has increased by more than expected to £20.7billion.” He went on: “Figures revealed that June borrowing was £6.6billion higher than the previous year. All of this of course, puts immense pressure on the chancellor already paying a fortune on interest payments.”

The GB News host continued: “It reduces our headroom as they call it with the amount of money she’s got to play with.

“This is actually pretty grim news for the chancellor. But government borrowing as it currently stands is significantly higher than they were expecting.”

Viewers reacted to the news as one person on X fumed: “The government are borrowing ‘the black hole’ every month!”

A second mocked: “Good old Labour,” while a third tweeted: “The most economically illiterate government we’ve seen in years. Making the Tories look almost competent.”

A third added: “Well done Rachel, you have created a £21 billion black hole in just a month.”

“You’ve really got a handle on the economy,” a fourth mused.

The UK economy shrank for two consecutive months in April and May, while unemployment and inflation have risen, as businesses and households come under pressure from tax rises, elevated borrowing costs, and global uncertainty amid Donald Trump’s trade war.

Reeves has faced furious demands from Labour backbenchers and the former party leader Neil Kinnock to consider introducing a wealth tax but she has so far attempted to keep her options open stating her main priority is economic growth.
