The Las Vegas Raiders have officially parted ways with quarterback Gardner Minshew, but his release has a notable twist. The team released the veteran signal-caller with a failed physical designation, raising concerns about his health and future in the league.

Minshew, who joined the Raiders last season, suffered a broken collarbone in Week 12, which prematurely ended his 2023 campaign. While it remains unclear whether he is still recovering from that injury or dealing with a new issue, the failed physical complicate his path to a new team. Minshew arrived in Las Vegas after previous stints with the Jaguars, Eagles, and Colts. The former sixth-round pick earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2023 after stepping in for an injured Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis, nearly leading the Colts to the playoffs. However, his time with the Raiders was less successful, as he went 2-7 in nine starts, throwing nine touchdowns against ten interceptions with a career-low 81.0 passer rating.

The Raiders’ quarterback situation took a sharp turn when they acquired Geno Smith in a trade. Smith, a proven veteran with playoff experience, is expected to lead the team forward. Initially, many believed Las Vegas might use the sixth overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft on a rookie quarterback, but Smith’s arrival makes that scenario less certain.
