The Kansas City Chiefs have restructured Patrick Mahomes’ big-money contract once again to create more cap room for the team – likely to be used on retooling the team ahead of the new season

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced they have restructured the contract of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes just a month removed from missing out on the historic three-peat. Defensive tackle Chris Jones has also seen his contract restructured.

Andy Reid has been struggling to keep his team together in free agency since the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl in February. But now, following the restructuring, the head coach has much more breathing room.

Over The Cap had projected the team to go into the new season $23.6 million over the salary cap. But now after this move, as per ESPN, the Chiefs have $49 million available.

Some of that space will be used to make the signings of offensive tackle Jaylon Moore, running back Elijah Mitchell, and cornerback Kristian Fulton official. The trio agreed new deals earlier this week.

This marks the fourth time Mahomes’ deal at the Chiefs has been restructured. Five years on from the quarterback signing the deal, his 10-year $450 million contract remains the only deal to run through 2031.

He was previously due to count $28 million. While Jones, who is signed until 2028, was due $23.6 million. It is expected to cover the two-year $30 million deal for Moore. While Fulton has signed a contract worth $20.5 million over two years.

The Chiefs have managed to keep most of the team’s core together despite the Super Bowl defeat, but moves were always likely. Tershawn Wharton is set to depart the team in free agency, considering he’s coming off his rookie contract and will be commanding more money than the Chiefs can afford, while still remaining under the cap.

Joe Thuney was also traded by the Chiefs in a surprising move by the beaten Super Bowl team. Kansas City dealt the All-Pro left guard to the Chicago Bears in an unexpected move, which was widely believed to be a move to get the team closer to below the cap. Trading Thuney saved the Chiefs significant money against the cap, as they moved his 2025 salary of $15.5 million to the Bears – along with his $500,000 workout bonus.

Head coach Reid’s comments suggested the move wasn’t a football-related decision, indicating it was purely a financial one. Reid said: ““He’s one of my favorite all time guys that I’ve coached. He’s just a good dude — tough, dirty tough. He’s going to do Chicago a heck of a job. He still can play.”
