The wife of Sir Chris Hoy, Lady Sarra, has issued an update on her husband’s terminal cancer battle.

The mum of two was on Lorraine today (March 17) to discuss her and her husband’s ongoing health battles…

Lady Sarra Hoy talks Sir Chris’ cancer battle and her own health

During today’s edition of Lorraine, Lady Sarra appeared in a pre-recorded interview.

Last year, Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Shortly after, Lady Sarra was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

I think people are really surprised to know that you can sort of be okay.

Speaking to Lorraine, Lady Sarra opened up about how she’s coping.

“It’s been okay and I think people are really surprised to know that you can sort of be okay, and I think that’s definitely what’s helped us get through. Inevitably there are those three in the morning moments and you’ve just said to him, we’re okay now, the kids are fine, we’re fine now so let’s hang onto that,” she said.

‘We will not become victims’

Lady Sarra continued, saying: “It came very early on, exactly that, you just don’t sleep, everything is awful. It was about trying to control what I could, and I just thought, I can’t do anything about cancer, I can’t do anything about MS [multiple sclerosis], I can’t control any of that.

You just don’t sleep, everything is awful.

She then continued: “When everything is spiralling just to stop and say, right now, we’re safe, the children are safe, this can’t define us. We will not become the victims of this,” she then added.

Speaking about her husband’s cancer diagnosis, she said: “He’s been used to doing hard things and dealing with pressure but at the time it didn’t feel like anything similar. It felt really like everything had been stripped down.”

Lady Sarra on keeping diagnosis a secret

The wife of Sir Chris then continued, admitting that she actually kept her diagnosis a secret at first.

“It did almost feel a bit like the final straw but then equally so surreal, that it was some ways easier to deal with my diagnosis because I could just say well I have to just put that to the side right now…,” she said.

“The only person I wanted to tell and get support from was him [Chris]. I’ve never ever held a secret like that at all, but it was literally six weeks, when the diagnosis came, after his, and I just knew it wasn’t the right time,” she then added.

She then spoke about how she’s seizing the day now.

“Yeah, acceptance and just treading lightly and ceasing the day doesn’t have to be these bucket list things. Seizing the day is going out for a walk, we wouldn’t have been doing this but for this situation, now we’re spending this time together and it’s wonderful. It’s just really optimistic and that’s where the hope grows,” she said.
