Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested Friday night after an alleged assault incident involving a ‘household or family member’ in Texas

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy won’t be charged following his arrest in Texas on Friday.

The 5-foot-11 NFL wideout was facing a charge of assault against a family or household member by impeding breathing or circulation, per Williamson County Sheriff’s Office jail records. But on Saturday, Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick told The Austin American-Statesman that his office wouldn’t accept the case.

“After further investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and further discussion with a third-party witness, Mr. Worthy and his attorneys, this case is being declined at this time pending completion of the investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office,” read an email from Dick’s office.

“Mr. Worthy and his lawyers are fully cooperating with this investigation. We will continue to evaluate the case. As is our practice with all declines, should you develop additional information indicative of probable cause in this case, our office will consider that information and may present the case at that time to a Williamson County Grand Jury.”

One of Worthy’s attorneys, Sam Bassett, confirmed they would “continue to cooperate” with law enforcement. The Chiefs wide receiver was reportedly still in jail early Saturday evening but was expected to be released after the DA’s decision was processed.

Worthy’s jail records showed an “ASSAULT FAM/HOUSE MEM IMPEDE BREATH/CIRCULAT” charge, which in Texas is a third-degree felony offense “committed by intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of the person by applying pressure to the person’s throat or neck or by blocking the person’s nose or mouth.”

Bassett and attorney Chip Lewis released a statement in defense of their client after the news of his arrest broke on Saturday morning. “We are aware of the allegation that led to Mr. Worthy’s arrest. We are working with law enforcement in Williamson County to ensure they have the benefit of the totality of circumstances that led to this allegation,” their statement read.

“The complainant was recently asked to vacate Mr. Worthy’s residence upon discovery of her infidelity. She has refused to do so and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy.

“We will continue to cooperate with the Williamson County authorities as we have full faith that their thorough investigation will support Mr. Worthy’s innocence.” Mirror U.S. Sports reached out to the Chiefs for comment following Worthy’s arrest.

Worthy is coming off an impressive rookie campaign in Kansas City. The former Texas Longhorns star put up 638 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 59 catches. He added three TDs in the run game, showcasing the wideout’s versatility.

The Chiefs have now seen a promising rookie arrested after a debut NFL campaign for the second year in a row. In 2024, wide receiver Rashee Rice was involved in a hit-and-run crash in Texas that left four people injured during the offseason.

Rice was available to play for the Chiefs on Opening Night despite reports claiming he was facing a half-season suspension from the NFL. He managed to make just four appearances during the 2024 campaign, though, having suffered a season-ending knee injury in September, leading to an increased workload for Worthy early into his debut year.

Rice could still be punished by the NFL after his return to the field. Meanwhile, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid recently discussed his high hopes for Worthy after his standout season. “We learned Xavier is more than a deep threat,” Reid said at the NFL combine. “He also has the ability to do that and we probably could have tapped into that even more. I’m not sure we’ve tapped that out. I think there’s more, and that’s exciting.”

The Chiefs attempted to complete a historic Super Bowl three-peat last season, entering the campaign after back-to-back championship wins – and with three rings in total during the Patrick Mahomes era. They finished the regular season with a 15-2 record and made it all the way to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. However, the Philadelphia Eagles denied Kansas City the historic feat, beating Mahomes and Co. 40-22.

The Chiefs will try to avenge the embarrassing defeat with Travis Kelce on the roster as the star tight end has decided to return for Year 13 despite retirement rumors doing the rounds. In another notable development, the team also kept Trey Smith after placing a franchise tag on the right guard ahead of the start of free agency.
