With Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb sharing several stories as Hoda prepares to enter the next stage of her career, Savannah had a personal story to share. She said that her mother made a great sacrifice when she was younger that helped ensure she could find her place in the world of news entertainment.

Savannah’s father died when she was just a high school senior. This led to her living at home while attending college to help her mother around the house. She wanted to be there for her mom as much as possible after her dad’s passing, and gave up much of her college life to do so.

This led to her getting her first big job offer. However, it meant that she had to leave her mother in Arizona and move to Montana to take the job. She said she couldn’t leave her mother to do this and needed to stay to help. However, Guthrie said her mother said, “I am not going to stand in the way of your dreams.” She told Savannah to go live her life.

“She could have held onto me. It wouldn’t have taken very much,” Savannah remembered. “But she’s like, ‘I’m not going to stand in the way of your dreams. I’m going to tell you, go, go, go.” Savannah then continued and said her mother told her, “If you can’t leave me, then I didn’t do my job right, Savannah.”
