Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones sign new Kansas City Chiefs contracts and help team clear $49m from 2025 salary cap

The Chiefs are now compliant with the NFL salary cap before the Wednesday deadline

THE Kansas City Chiefs have restructured their two biggest contracts to make room for new signings.

The Chiefs were left in a tough financial situation this offseason, but have remedied it by converting Patrick Mahomes’ and Chris Jones’ contracts.

Mahomes is currently signed on a 10-year, $450 million contract that runs through the 2031 season.

Jones is on an equally massive contract, signing a 5-year, $158.75 deal before the 2024 season.

Together, Mahomes and Jones took up over two-thirds of the Chiefs’ cap space, making it incredibly difficult for them to sign free agents.

By restructuring both of their contracts, the Chiefs have cleared over $49 million in space to sign new players.

The Chiefs have already made four major free agent acquisitions this offseason.

They have signed deals with offensive tackle Jaylon Moore, cornerback Kristian Fulton, running back Elijah Mitchell, and James Winchester.

Those deals added up to $55.15 million in total value and $30.15 million for 2025.

With those signings in place and the Chiefs’ contract restructuring, the team should have around $5 million in cap space remaining.

All 32 NFL teams are required to be under the NFL’s $279.2 million salary cap by 4 pm ET on Wednesday.

The Chiefs will have further roster flexibility once this deadline passes.
