For many years Rod Stewart was hiding a huge family secret from his fans. In November 1963 he and his then girlfriend Susannah Boffey welcomed a daughter named Sarah. The teenage couple gave their child up for adoption and it would be decades before she reconciled with Rod. Sarah Streeter was raised in rural Suss3x by adoptive parents Evelyn and Gerald Thubron. She had a happy childhood, entirely unaware that the famous singer who topped the charts in the Seventies was her father, and has admitted it was a profound shock when she found out the truth. Despite meeting Rod few times in her 20s she only began a tentative reconciliation with her birth father when she was in her 40s in 2007 following the d3ath of both her adoptive parents.

Sarah admits she has struggled with s::bstance ab::se issues, just like her half brother, Rod’s eldest son Sean, whose mother is Rod’s first wife Alannah Stewart. In a 2018 interview alongside Rod, Sarah confessed she had been a serial abuser of cocaine and alcohol for much of her early 30s. While she managed to get clean the d3ath of her adoptive mother Evelyn saw her relapse and at one point she was addicted to crck ccine.

“Why I’m still here I don’t know. I carry a huge amount of guilt about what I put people through. The way it affected my family and loved ones was terrible,” she told MailOnline in a joint interview wth her father.

“But I’ve chosen to talk about it because I think it’s important to be honest, and to show that even if you hit rock-bottom you can get over it.”

Sarah’s issues began after she met Rod a handful of times when she was in her 20s. Their relationship never took off and had fizzled out by the late 80s. for two decades they had barely any contact and it was during that time that Sarah, who works as a carer, became addicted to cocaine.

She insisits her problems were nothing to do with her relationship with Rod. “I was single, in my late 20s, and I got in with the wrong crowd. I think it was not having a child: there was this massive hole in my life. Coke filled that hole,” she said in their joint interview.

While she managed to shake that add1ct10n, she then got hooked on alcohol to the extent where she would have v0ka for breakfast, which she says was very painful for her mother. Now clean and sober she has a good relationship with Rod and is very much part of the vast Stewart clan.

Rod opened upon his relationship with his eldest child on The Joy Behar Show in 2010. “She was put up for adoption when I was 17 or 18, I think. I was absolutely stone broke … and so she was put up for adoption. Since her mum and dad have d13d, we’ve tried to come together and be close together, and it’s working out pretty well. I never felt like I was her dad, because I didn’t take her to school, change her nappies, there was no paternal thing there, but I’m trying.”

In 2011 in a CNN interview with Piers Morgan he acknowledged: “The relationship broke down somewhat because she was a bit awkward and had a big chip on her shoulder which I can’t blame her [for]. But in the last couple of years we’ve become somewhat close.”

In the same interview Rod also admitted to feeling guilt about giving her up all those years ago. “I feel guilty about everything. I carry lots of guilt,” he said.
