TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has spoken out for the first time since she told off radio DJ Vernon Kay for his awful attempt at a Scottish accent.

Lorraine had recorded a message in which she told Vernon off, which was meant as a joke but many people took it as a serious criticism of Vernon. However, on her show Lorraine this morning, the veteran TV presenter confirmed she had been joking, although she did add that Vernon’s impression wasn’t a very good one.

“The Scottish accent is a beautiful thing that comes in many different varieties, and not everybody sounds like Billy Connolly,” Lorraine said, in reference to Vernon Kay’s dodgy impersonation. “Although I do love him and he is the bestest thing in the world!”

She added: “I was just asked to do that as a joke for Vernon Kay and it was very, very funny, but I think a lot of people thought I was being serious. I wasn’t. His attempt at a Scottish accent was appalling though!”

Vernon had originally attempted a Scottish accent on his Radio 2 show on Friday morning, which led to Lorraine sending him a voice message. “Vernon, what are you doing? On behalf of Vernon Kay I would like to apologise to all of my fellow Scots for that incredibly offensive stereotype,” she said.

She added: “So, to the people of Scotland, Radio 2 would like to speak once again for Vernon Kay and please rest assured he is being sent on a 16 week accent awareness course.”

At the time, Vernon jokingly replied by saying: “Oh, I’ve been told, thank you Lorraine.”

Lorraine’s fans were recently concerned when she wore sunglasses indoors during an interview with Vernon Kay’s fellow BBC Radio 2 DJ, Scott Mills. On Friday 7 March, Scott addressed the “elephant in the room” as he said she was wearing the “most showbiz pair” of sunglasses.

Lorraine explained she was hiding her eyes. “Well, I fell over. I fell over and had washing in my hands, as you do in a big washing basket,” she said. “There was a step and then I fell over the step in my slippers; they’re too big for me, and I landed on a rhino. We’ve got a massive big wooden rhino that we brought back from Africa.

“Have you not got a wooden rhino? I thought everybody had a wooden rhino, and the thing is, it’s made of real solid wood so I… and I couldn’t stop myself because my hands were full of washing. Do you want to see it? Are you sure? Because it’s horrid.”

After Lorraine removed her sunglasses, Scott told listeners her eye injury was a “cracker.” She also mentioned that the swelling led people to believe she had fillers, though she made it clear she hadn’t.
